Polish astronaut Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski will soon travel to the ISS!

Polish astronaut Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski will soon travel to the International Space Station (ISS). During a press conference, he revealed that he would bring a Polish flag and pierogi with him. He emphasized that space is not only for the elite but for everyone.

Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski reminded that the first Polish spaceflight took place in 1978. "Poland was the fourth country to send its citizen into space. As a child in the 80s, I could only dream that one day I would become an astronaut. Now, that dream is coming true," he said. He added that he was born on April 12th, the 23rd anniversary of Yuri Gagarin?s first flight, and that his mother always wished him well on Cosmonautics Day.

Mission Axiom-4 Uznański-Wiśniewski emphasized that he represents Poland and all Poles?scientists, teachers, and students?who contribute to the development of science at various levels. "Space is available to everyone, not just the greatest," he stressed.

Peggy Whitson, the commander of the Axiom-4 mission, reminded everyone that it has been over 40 years since astronauts from Poland, India, and Hungary first went into space. "Commercial spaceflights are accelerating space programs and technological advancements in these countries," she said. She added that the international crew will inspire a new generation of young people.

The Axiom-4 crew has been training since August of the previous year, getting familiar with the ISS systems, the Dragon spacecraft, which will carry them into orbit, and learning how to handle emergency situations. Whitson noted that the goal is to turn this diverse group into a high-performance team.

Polish astronaut will take a flag and pierogi to the ISS The American astronaut joked that pronouncing "Sławosz" was difficult for her and the rest of the crew, so the Polish astronaut was nicknamed "Slave." Uznański-Wiśniewski admitted that the Axiom-4 crew feels like family to him, and he has a special connection to Mirosław Hermaszewski, the first Pole in space, who supported him during the selection process. Uznański added that he will take the flag that accompanied Hermaszewski on his flight into space aboard the spacecraft.

The Axiom-4 mission will also have a Polish culinary touch. Uznański-Wiśniewski, in collaboration with a Polish company, developed a technology to bring pierogi into space. "This is a first, Polish pierogi will be taken to the ISS. I hope they will taste just as good as on Earth," said the astronaut.

The Axiom-4 mission is scheduled for the spring of 2025. Together with Uznański-Wiśniewski, Peggy Whitson (USA) will serve as mission commander, Shubhanshu Shukla (India) will be the pilot, and Tibor Kapu (Hungary) will be the mission specialist. On February 5, 2025, the crew will visit Warsaw.

The goal of the Axiom-4 mission is to transport four astronauts to the International Space Station aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, which will be launched by a Falcon 9 rocket. The entire mission is expected to last 14 days.
